The tragic story of the film is based on real events. Keiko rents a small apartment in Tokyo with her four children. Due to the size of the apartment, she can only register herself and her eldest son, Akira, as residents. The other three children are forced to hide from public view and do not attend school.

One day, the mother of the family disappears, leaving the children a note promising to return by Christmas and a small amount of money. However, the holiday passes, months pass, and Keiko still does not return. The children have less and less hope of seeing their mother again.
