Footprint One: The Path In

The first area is the route from the road to the setup position.

Width matters less than the swept path. A long chassis turning through a gate sweeps a much wider arc than its own dimensions suggest, and the pinch point is usually a gate post, a bollard line, or a parked van rather than the opening itself.

Height and gradient belong here too. Low canopies, car park entrances, signage gantries and steep ramp transitions all stop vehicles that would otherwise fit.

Footprint Two: The Outrigger Spread

The second area is the one people forget entirely. Once parked, the machine needs room to put its legs down, and that spread is considerably wider than the truck.

Many machines allow a narrow or partial setup where space is restricted, which sounds like the answer until you read what it costs. A restricted spread means a reduced working envelope, so the reach available drops, sometimes sharply. Measure the spread on both sides. Sites are rarely symmetrical, and a wall on one side changes which way the machine has to face.

When the boom slews, the counterweight and the rear of the superstructure move too. That rotating envelope needs clearance, and it catches out crews who parked tight against a wall because the boom was going to work in the opposite direction.

Walk a full circle around the intended position and look at everything within the machine’s swing radius: fencing, parked vehicles, columns, scaffold, tree trunks. Anything you would not want the counterweight to meet needs either clearance or removal before the legs go down.

Footprint Four: The Ground Below the Work

The fourth area has nothing to do with the machine at all. It is the exclusion zone beneath the basket, and on a constrained site it is usually the hardest one to find.

Tools fall. That area has to be closed to pedestrians and vehicles for the duration of the work, which on a live retail frontage or a hospital access road is a negotiation rather than a measurement.

When One of the Four Does Not Fit

There are more options than people assume, and they are worth exploring before abandoning machine access altogether.

A restricted setup with a taller machine can deliver the same reach from a smaller footprint. A tracked or compact unit may get through an opening a truck cannot, at the cost of transport and setup time. Working outside business hours can free the ground-level space that is impossible to close during the day. And moving the setup position further from the building, then choosing a machine with more outreach, solves more tight site problems than any other single change.

Measuring the Space the Machine Actually Needs

Tight sites reward preparation and punish assumptions. Measure the path in as a swept curve rather than a width, measure the outrigger spread on both sides, walk the swing radius, and find the ground area beneath the work before promising anyone a date.
